It's back to lighter fare for "Monster," the album's semi-title track which chronicles the exploits of Lady Gaga and a boy she meets in the club. She issues callouts to the likes of Marilyn Monroe, Judy Garland, and Princess Diana, while exhorting listeners to "Find your freedom in music / Find your Jesus / Find your Kubrick." That's where her head is at for much of the album - addressing the complexities that come with fame. "Dance In the Dark" sees Lady Gaga in the role of conscious pop diva, taking on the duel demons of tabloid notoriety and female body issues.

The honest themes of this album, however, will do much to tear down the bizarre and mysterious persona she's constructed, and reveal the vulnerable artist within.

The song is cleverly-written and carries emotional weight - though Gaga's enigmatic image may hinder some from connecting with the heart of the material. Particularly when she slows things down on "Speechless," the album's lone ballad. It'd be a stretch to call anything Lady Gaga creates "understated," but there's the slightest hint of subtlety on this record.
